The most reliable way to find your ring size at home is to measure the inside of a ring that already fits the same finger and match it to a size chart, then go up about a quarter to a half size if your new ring is a wide band. Measure at the end of the day, at room temperature, and check it more than once.
A custom ring is made for one finger, so settling the size before we start is one of the loveliest details of the whole process. Here is how to measure, when to size up, and what our name rings, signets and wedding bands are available in.

What is the most accurate way to measure ring size at home?
Measure a ring that already fits well on the same finger. Lay it flat on a ruler, measure the inside diameter in millimeters edge to edge, and match that number to the chart below. It is more reliable than wrapping string or paper around your finger, which can stretch or sit at an angle.
| Method | How it works | How reliable |
|---|---|---|
| Measure a ring you already own | Measure the inside diameter in mm and match it to the chart. | Very good, if the ring fits the same finger comfortably |
| Plastic or printable ring sizer | Slide it on like a ring and read the size. | Good, when printed at true scale |
| String or paper strip | Wrap the finger, mark the overlap, measure the length. | A starting point only |
Here are the standard U.S. sizes and their approximate inside diameters.
| U.S. size | Inside diameter | U.S. size | Inside diameter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 14.9 mm | 10 | 19.8 mm |
| 5 | 15.7 mm | 11 | 20.6 mm |
| 6 | 16.5 mm | 12 | 21.4 mm |
| 7 | 17.3 mm | 13 | 22.2 mm |
| 8 | 18.1 mm | 14 | 23.0 mm |
| 9 | 18.9 mm |
When is the best time to measure your finger?
Fingers change a little through the day. They tend to be smaller in the morning and in the cold, and a little fuller in the evening and in warm weather. For the truest reading:
- Measure at the end of the day, at room temperature.
- Measure two or three times and use the size that comes up most.
- Check the knuckle. The ring should slide over it with a little resistance and sit snug without pinching.
- Measure the exact finger and hand the ring will be worn on. Your right and left hands are often slightly different.
Do wide rings need a bigger size?
Usually, yes. A wide band covers more of your finger, so it feels snugger than a slim band in the same size. Many jewelers suggest going up about a quarter to a half size for bands around 6mm and wider.
That matters for bold pieces like our Custom Personalized Name Ring, which sits on a 6.5mm band and comes in sizes 8 to 12 in quarter sizes, so you can fine-tune the fit. A slim band like our 3mm Classic Comfort Fit Domed Wedding Band will usually match your standard measurement.

Men's signet rings. Signets have a substantial top and wear on the ring finger or the pinky. Our Men's Nugget Signet Ring comes in men's sizes 8 to 12 in half sizes. For a pinky ring, simply measure and order the size of that finger.
Wedding bands. Our 5mm Comfort Fit Wedding Band and 3mm domed band both run from size 4 to 14 in half sizes. A comfort fit band has a rounded inside edge, so it slides over the knuckle smoothly. If you are pairing a band with an engagement ring, measure with the engagement ring on so both sit comfortably together.
A ring as a gift. Still deciding how to find the size without giving away the surprise? Borrow a ring the recipient already wears on the same finger and measure its inside diameter. If they only wear rings on the other hand, allow for a small difference and give us a call before you order.
What if the size is not quite right?
Every custom piece is made for one person, which is what makes it special and also means it cannot go back on a shelf. That is exactly why our team is happy to check the size, spelling and finish with you before we begin, and why we handle anything that is not right as an exchange or a correction. Custom-made rings are made to your size, so sizing is included. Ready-to-wear rings can be sized for you as well, for an additional cost.
If you are near Killeen or Copperas Cove, the easiest option of all is to stop by either of our counters inside HEB and let us size your finger in person. In-store sizing is free.
How long does a custom ring take?
It depends on the ring. Personalized name rings are made in 5 to 7 business days before shipping. Rings that get standard engraving on a ready-made piece ship in 2 to 3 business days. In-stock rings ship in 1 to 2 business days, and a ready-to-wear ring can be sized for an additional cost. Every piece arrives in a Gold Time gift box.
Quick answers about ring sizing
Should I size up or down if I am between sizes? For a wide band, go up. For a slim band, the larger size is usually the more comfortable choice, especially if your knuckle is larger than the base of your finger.
Does 10K or 14K gold change the size? No. The size is the same in silver, 10K and 14K. The metal changes the color and the gold content. Solid gold pieces are hallmarked with their karat, and our 10K vs 14K vs silver guide explains the difference.
Can I order a name ring outside sizes 8 to 12? Message us before ordering and we will let you know what we can do. Our Personalized Cursive Name Ring is available in sizes 5 to 9.
Is a coin ring sized the same way? Yes. Measure the same way, and keep in mind a coin ring has a larger top. Our guide on setting a gold Eagle coin in a ring covers how those pieces are built.
