Yes, when it is set in a bezel. A well-made bezel cradles the coin by its rim, with no heat, solder or drill anywhere near it, and a screw top bezel lets you lift the coin right back out whenever you like. That is how we set every coin that comes through our shop, and it is why a coin pendant can be both a piece of jewelry and something you keep for its gold.
What a bezel does
A bezel is a gold frame made to the exact diameter of your coin. The coin settles in, and the frame holds it by the rim, much the way a setting holds a stone. Nothing happens to the coin itself. No heat, no filing, no piercing.
That matters because an American Gold Eagle is bullion. Its worth lives in the gold it contains. An unaltered coin still trades on that gold whether it spent the last decade in a safe or around someone's neck.
Three things that change a coin permanently
There are older methods you will still come across, and it helps to know the difference.
Drilling. A hole punched through the coin for a jump ring. Metal is removed and the design is interrupted, and there is no undoing it.
Soldering to the coin. Heating a bail directly onto the face or edge. Solder is a different alloy and it bonds into the surface.
Glue or epoxy. Some inexpensive mountings seat the coin in adhesive. It tends to give way in time and leaves residue behind.
Coins set this way lose the flexibility a bezel gives you, which is exactly why we set every coin the gentle way. It is a fair question to ask any jeweler, and a good one will answer it happily.

Not every bezel is designed to come apart, and that is a genuine choice rather than a limitation.
The polished edge screw top is threaded, so the top ring unscrews and the coin lifts free. Choose this if you like the idea of the coin staying fully flexible, or if you might want to feature a different coin down the road. It costs a little more, because those threads are cut to keep working smoothly for years.
A fixed bezel, like the rope edge or diamond-cut edge, closes around the coin for good. The lines are cleaner and the price is gentler, and the setting is designed to stay as one piece. Your coin remains completely unaltered inside it.
Both protect the coin. They simply differ in how much you want to leave open.
Ring or pendant?
Worth a moment's thought, because they live very different lives.
An American Gold Eagle is 22 karat, a touch softer than the 14K we build mountings from. A pendant rests against fabric and swings free. A ring meets door handles, steering wheels and countertops every day.
A well-built bezel shields the rim either way. Over ten years, though, a ring will simply see more of the world than a pendant does. If you want the coin's detail to stay crisp for decades, a pendant is the gentler home. If you love the idea of wearing it on your hand daily, a ring is a wonderful piece and the softening that comes with time is part of its story.

Most American Gold Eagles are bullion, and bullion makes wonderful jewelry. A few coins are better admired as they are, and we will always tell you when yours is one of them.
Proof coins. Struck with mirrored fields and collected for that finish, they carry a premium beyond their gold. Setting one will not harm the metal, though daily wear does soften what makes a proof special.
Graded and sealed coins. If your coin has been professionally graded in a holder, that grade often carries more value than the gold itself, and opening the holder sets it aside.
Anything older, rarer or inherited. Have it looked at first. If it turns out to be everyday bullion, we would be delighted to build something for you. If it turns out to be something more, you will be glad you asked.
We are happy to take a look either way. We would far rather point you in the right direction than set a coin that was better left in its holder.
Questions worth asking any jeweler
- Will anything be drilled, soldered or glued to the coin?
- Is the bezel removable, and how does it open?
- What karat is the mounting, and is it hallmark stamped?
- Is the piece made in house?
- What happens if the fit needs adjusting once you see it?
For ours: every piece is made in our own shop, hallmark stamped for karat weight, and delivered in a complimentary gift box. Each coin setting is built for one coin and one person, which is what makes it yours, so our team is glad to walk through the design with you first, and we handle anything that needs adjusting as an exchange or a correction.
