For a name necklace you will reach for most days, 14K gold is our favorite recommendation. 10K gives you solid gold with a wonderfully hard-wearing finish. Sterling silver is bright, crisp and easy to love. All three are genuine precious metals, and the happiest choice depends on how you want to wear it. Here is how we help customers decide.
What karat means
Karat measures how much pure gold is in the alloy. Pure gold is 24 karat, which is far too soft to wear.
- 10K is 41.7% gold. The additional metals make it the most scratch resistant of the three, which is lovely for an active life.
- 14K is 58.3% gold. A noticeably richer yellow, beautifully durable, and it holds more value because it holds more gold.
- Sterling silver is 92.5% silver. A real precious metal with a bright, crisp finish that takes a gorgeous polish. It does develop a patina over time, which lifts away easily.
One thing we always mention: we offer both solid karat gold and gold-plated sterling silver. They are different pieces at different prices. Plated silver gives you the warm gold look beautifully, and the plating does soften with years of daily contact. If you want the gold color to stay exactly as it is for decades, solid gold is the one.

Here is something most guides skip, and it matters more than the karat conversation.
A name necklace is a length of precious metal shaped into letters. Wherever two letters meet, or a letter carries a delicate loop or tail, the design asks a little more of the metal. Those joins are what deserve your attention.
So the questions we ask customers are these.
How thick is the piece? Thickness does more for longevity than karat does. A generously thick 10K nameplate will outlast a very fine 14K one.
How connected is the script? A flowing script where every letter touches its neighbor supports itself beautifully.
How long is the name? Longer names span further, so a little extra thickness rewards you.
If your name is long, or has letters with fine loops, put your first dollar into thickness and a well-connected font. We will happily tell you which of ours suits your name best.

For everyday wear you will keep for years: 14K. It looks the way gold should look, it asks almost nothing of you, and it holds real value by weight.
For solid gold with a hard-wearing finish: 10K. Genuinely solid gold, hallmark stamped, and the toughest of the three against daily knocks.
For sensitive skin: we usually suggest 14K, since more gold means less of the alloy metals that tend to cause reactions.
Why so many customers love silver
We sell more gold than silver, and we still recommend silver often. Here is why.
Silver lets you live with a style. You can see how a script suits your neck, how the length falls, how often you reach for it. Many customers add a gold piece later, and plenty never feel the need because they simply love the one they have.
It is a wonderful choice for celebrating a name right now, with the freedom to add another piece as your story grows. It is also a favorite for gifting when you are still deciding what the recipient will love, because it is generous and personal without presuming their taste in metal.
And one detail we are proud of: every piece arrives in a gift box, so it is ready to give the moment it lands.
If the warm gold look is what you are after at a more approachable price, gold-plated sterling is a genuinely lovely option. Just choose it knowing the plating softens over years of wear.

A solid 14K nameplate deserves a chain to match. Two reasons. A very fine chain feels the weight at the bail over time, and a silver chain beneath a gold nameplate reads as an accident rather than a choice. If you are buying gold, pair it with a gold chain and the whole piece sings.
We are happy to help you get it just right
