Are Grillz Permanent? How to Take Them Off

No — custom grillz from Gold Time are removable, not permanent. They fit snugly over your teeth and slide off whenever you want, the same way they slide on. There's no cement, no dental work, and nothing attached to your teeth. Here's the breakdown on how removable grillz actually work, from a family shop that's been handcrafting them in Central Texas since 1991.

Removable vs. "permanent" grillz — what's the difference?

The confusion is understandable — "permanent grillz" is a real thing in the jewelry world, but it's a completely different product from what we make. Permanent grillz are actual dental caps or veneers bonded onto your teeth by a dentist, using dental cement or crowns. That process is irreversible-ish (removal requires a dental procedure), expensive, and it changes your actual teeth.

What we make is different. Custom grillz are a snug-fitting metal cap, built from a mold of your teeth, that you put on and take off like a retainer. Nothing is bonded, nothing is permanent, and your natural teeth underneath are completely unaffected.

How removal actually works

Because your grillz are custom-molded to your exact teeth, they fit snugly — snug enough to stay in place while you talk and smile, but not so tight that removal is difficult. To take them off:

  1. Use clean, dry hands — wet fingers make grip harder
  2. Grip from the sides, not just the front — this distributes the pulling force evenly
  3. Gently rock and pull — a slight side-to-side motion combined with an outward pull releases the fit smoothly
  4. Never yank straight out with force — this can bend the metal or cause discomfort. If it's not coming loose easily, stop and try a different angle.

Most people find removal takes seconds once they're used to their own set's fit. The first few times can feel a little unfamiliar — that's normal.

When should you take grillz out?

Every night, and any time you eat or drink. This isn't optional:

  • Before sleeping — wearing grillz overnight traps bacteria and moisture against your teeth for hours
  • Before eating or drinking — food and beverages get trapped between the grill and your teeth, which is uncomfortable and unhygienic
  • Before brushing your teeth — you need direct access to brush normally

Will removable grillz damage my teeth?

No, when made and worn correctly. Because nothing is bonded or cemented, your teeth underneath are unaffected by wearing grillz — you can stop wearing them any time and your teeth are exactly as they were. This is one of the real advantages of removable grillz over the "permanent" dental route: zero commitment, zero risk to your natural teeth, and the freedom to wear them only when you want to. What if my grillz feel too tight or too loose the first time?

Too tight on first wear is actually normal — a brand-new custom fit can feel snug the first few times before you get used to the exact fit and motion of putting it on and taking it off. If it still feels uncomfortably tight after a few uses, or you feel real pressure or pain, stop wearing it and contact us — we'll take a look.

Too loose is less common with a good impression, but can happen. If your set doesn't stay snug through normal talking and smiling, that's a fit issue on our end, and we'll refit or remake it under our Guarantee & Fit Policy.

Can I wear grillz every day if I want to?

Yes — plenty of our customers wear their sets daily. Just remember to take them out to eat, drink, sleep, and brush, and clean them regularly. Daily wearers should expect to bring their set in for a professional polish every year or two. Full lifespan expectations in our how long do grillz last guide.

Do I need to see a dentist to get grillz?

No. Because our grillz are removable and nothing is bonded to your teeth, there's no dental procedure involved. You take your own impression at home with our impression kit, mail it to us, and we handcraft your set from that mold. No dentist visit required.
