How Long Do Custom Grillz Last?

Solid silver, 10K, and 14K gold custom grillz can last for decades — we've had customers bring in sets we made 15 years ago that still look sharp. The metal itself doesn't wear out. What determines how long your grillz last comes down to three things: the metal you chose, how often you wear them, and how you care for them. Here's the honest breakdown from a family shop that's been handcrafting custom grillz in Central Texas since 1991.

The short answer

With basic care — rinsing after wear, a weekly clean, and proper storage — solid metal grillz easily last 10+ years. We've seen 15 and 20-year-old sets still holding their shape and shine. The pieces that don't last are almost always plated, not solid, or neglected, not worn.

What actually determines lifespan

1. Solid metal vs. plated

This is the single biggest factor. Solid silver, 10K, or 14K gold is the same metal all the way through — there's nothing to wear off. Gold-plated or gold-filled grillz have a thin layer of gold over a base metal, and that layer wears through in months of regular wear, especially in the mouth where saliva, food acids, and friction all work against it. Once the plating goes, you're left with base metal — dull, sometimes irritating, and worth almost nothing. If you want grillz that last years, solid metal is non-negotiable. See our silver vs gold comparison if you're deciding between metals.

2. How often you wear them

Grillz worn a few times a month for photos or nights out will outlast a set worn 8+ hours a day, every day — simple wear and tear math. Daily wearers should expect to bring their set in for a professional polish every year or two to keep it looking its best; occasional wearers may go 5+ years without needing one.

3. How you care for them

This is the factor you control completely. Solid metal doesn't degrade on its own — it holds up to normal wear indefinitely. What shortens a grill's life is neglect: not rinsing after wear, letting food and saliva residue sit, storing them wet, or cleaning them with the wrong products. Silver vs. gold: does one last longer?

Both last a long time with care, but they age differently. Silver tarnishes with air exposure — it needs more frequent polishing to stay bright, but tarnish is cosmetic, not structural, and always polishes back out. Gold doesn't tarnish, so it holds its shine with less maintenance. Neither metal "wears out" faster than the other; silver just asks for more upkeep to look its best.

What about the stones — do moissanite or diamond tips last as long as the metal?

Yes. Moissanite is nearly as hard as diamond and both are more than durable enough for the life of the piece. What can happen over many years of heavy wear is the setting around a stone loosening slightly — if that happens, bring it in and we'll re-secure it. This is uncommon and typically only shows up after a decade-plus of daily wear.

Signs it's time for a professional cleaning or check-up

  • The metal looks dull even after you clean it at home — usually means it's due for a professional polish
  • A stone feels slightly loose when you run a fingernail across it
  • The fit feels different than it used to — can happen if your teeth have shifted over the years
  • Visible scratching that a home cleaner isn't lifting

None of these mean your grillz are ruined — they mean it's time for a tune-up. Bring your set into either of our HEB counters and we'll take a look, often while you wait.

Can grillz be repaired or refreshed after years of wear?

Almost always, yes. Professional polishing restores shine to solid metal no matter how long you've had it. Loose stones can be re-set. Minor dents can often be worked out. Because we handcrafted the piece originally, we know exactly how it was built and can service it accordingly.

The bottom line

Buy solid metal, take them out to eat and drink, rinse after wear, clean weekly, and store them dry — do that, and your custom grillz are a piece you'll still be wearing a decade from now, not something you'll replace next year.
