Solid grillz are made of the metal, gold or silver, all the way through. Gold-plated grillz have a base metal core with a thin layer of real gold applied to the surface. Solid pieces cost more upfront and hold their color for the life of the piece, while plated pieces cost less initially but the gold layer will wear thin over time and eventually need replating.
Solid vs. Gold-Plated: Side by Side
| Solid gold | Gold-plated | |
|---|---|---|
| Composition | Gold (10K, 14K, etc.) all the way through | Base metal core with a thin gold layer on the surface |
| Upfront cost | Higher, and it climbs with karat, piece count and design | Lower than a comparable solid piece |
| Color over time | Holds its color permanently, gold doesn't wear off | Gold layer thins with wear and can eventually show the base metal underneath |
| Best for | A long-term piece you'll wear regularly for years | Trying a look, occasional wear, or a lower upfront budget |
Why the Price Gap Exists
The difference comes down to how much actual gold is in the piece. A solid grill is gold from the outer surface to the inner surface touching your teeth. A plated grill is mostly base metal with gold only on the outside, so it uses far less gold overall, which is what keeps the price down. That's not a quality shortcut so much as a different tradeoff: less gold, lower cost, shorter lifespan on the finish.

Compare the optionsHow Plating Wears Over Time
Because a grill is handled daily, put in and taken out, cleaned, exposed to saliva, the plating layer gradually thins with normal wear faster than it would on jewelry that just sits on a shelf. Eventually a plated piece may need to be replated to keep its original color. A solid piece doesn't have this issue, since there's no thin surface layer to wear through, the color is the metal itself.
Which Should You Choose?
If you're planning to wear one set regularly for years, solid gold is the better long-term value even with the higher starting price. If you want to try a specific style, style out a piece for occasional wear, or work with a tighter budget right now, gold-plated is a reasonable way to get the look. Some of our pieces, like our 6-piece satin finish set below, let you choose solid gold, sterling silver, or plated on the same design, so you can compare the tradeoff directly.

Is gold-plated grillz a bad option?
Not inherently, it's a legitimate lower-cost way to get a gold look, you just know upfront that the plating will wear over time and may eventually need replating, unlike solid gold.
How long does gold plating last on grillz?
It varies with how often you wear and handle the piece. Daily wear will show plating wear faster than occasional use. If your plated piece starts showing color changes at the edges, that's the plating thinning.
Is solid gold worth the extra cost?
For a piece you plan to wear long term, yes, most people find solid gold pays for itself by not needing replating or replacement. For occasional or trial wear, plated can make more sense.
