In grillz, one "piece" or "cap" covers one tooth. A single cap is one tooth, a double cap is two teeth side by side on the same side of your mouth, a 2 piece fang set is one cap on each canine, and a 6 piece set covers six teeth on one row. When a set covers both rows, the listing says top and bottom. Here is how to read any grillz listing with confidence, from a family shop that has been making custom grillz in Central Texas since 1991.

What does "piece" mean in grillz?
A piece is one tooth. On our listings, the piece count is the total number of teeth the set covers, so a 6 piece grill covers six teeth and a 12 piece grill covers twelve.
Grillz terms at a glance
| Term | What it covers | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Cap | One tooth | The basic unit of every grill |
| Single cap (1 piece) | One tooth of your choice | Most people pick a front tooth or a canine for a first cap |
| 2 piece fangs | Both canines, one cap on each side | Frames the smile evenly from both sides |
| Double cap | Two teeth next to each other on one side | For example a canine and the incisor beside it; you tell us left or right |
| Triple cap (3 piece) | Three teeth | A step up in coverage while still showing natural teeth |
| 4, 6 or 8 piece | A stretch of the front row, on one row | A 6 piece usually runs canine to canine across the front |
| Top and bottom set | Both rows | The description tells you how the teeth split between rows |
Single cap vs double cap vs 2 piece: which is which?
These three get mixed up more than any other grillz terms, and the difference is where the caps sit.
A single cap covers one tooth, and you choose which one. Our Custom Single Tooth Grillz go on whichever tooth you name in your order notes.
A 2 piece fang set puts one cap on each canine, so you get a matching look on both sides of your smile. Our 2 Piece Solid Canine Fangs are the classic example.
A double cap is also two caps, but they sit side by side on the same side of your mouth, usually a canine and the incisor next to it. It gives you a bolder accent on one side. On our Moissanite Incisor and Solid Canine Double Cap, you tell us left or right and which two teeth you want covered.

See options and pricingHow many teeth does a 6 piece grill cover?
Six teeth on one row. On most smiles that means the six front teeth, from canine to canine, on the top or the bottom. Our 6 piece listings cover one row, and a set for both rows is either a second 6 piece set or a listing built as a top and bottom set, like our 12 Piece Two-Tone Trillion Grillz, which covers six on top and six on the bottom.
How to tell if a listing is top, bottom, or both
- Read the title. A set that covers both rows says top and bottom, or gives the split, for example "6 Top and 6 Bottom."
- Read what is included. The description lists how many teeth are on each row. Our 10 Piece Trillion Tip Set, for example, is two top canines plus an eight piece bottom row.
- Treat the photos as inspiration. Some photos show larger custom orders to display a design. The written description is what you are ordering.
- Tell us your choice. Use your order notes for which row and which teeth, or text us before you order and we will confirm it with you.
Are double caps and larger sets one connected piece?
Yes, double caps and larger sets are a single, connected piece. If you prefer to have the grill separated into multiple pieces, or if you prefer to not have a bar behind the front teeth to connect the canines, just let us know. We'll customize your set to be exactly how you want. Either way, every grill is built from your own impression so it seats on your teeth the way your smile is shaped.
Style and finish terms you will see
- Open face: a gold or silver frame around the edge of the tooth that lets your natural tooth show through the middle. Our open face vs solid guide compares the two looks.
- Solid: the cap covers the whole front of the tooth in metal.
- Fang: a canine cap shaped to a point.
- Box canine: a squared off canine cap instead of a pointed fang, for a blockier look.
- Window: open panels across the front teeth, sometimes filled with a textured finish.
- Diamond cut: patterns cut into the metal so it catches light. It is a metal finish, not a stone.
- Trillion: a triangular shape. On some sets it is cut into the metal, and on others it is a moissanite stone, so check the description to see which one you are getting.
- Diamond dust: a frosted, sparkling texture on the metal surface. Also a finish, not a stone.
- Moissanite tip or iced: real stones set into the cap. Our moissanite vs diamond guide explains the choice.
- Two tone: two metal colors in one set, usually yellow gold frames with white details.
- Coverup: a cap that covers a missing or chipped tooth. Extra charges may apply, so text a photo of your smile before you order and we will confirm what will work. See grillz with a gap or missing teeth.
Does top vs bottom change how you order?
Yes, in one important way: the impression. The kit ships with every custom grillz order, and one kit makes 2 impressions. That gives you 2 tries for a top-only or bottom-only grill, or 1 try for a top and bottom set. The putty sets in about 3 minutes, so read our perfect impression guide before you start.
Grillz are made to fit each person individually, and designs may differ based on your dental structure. Made from your own impression, and we guarantee it fits that impression, which is why a good mold matters. Production takes 7 to 10 business days once your impression is received and verified, and most orders arrive 4 to 8 weeks door to door.
How many teeth should you get?
If this is your first set, two caps is the size most people underestimate: it shows every time you talk and it is easy to wear. A 6 piece set makes a fuller statement across the front, and a top and bottom set is a complete look. Our first set guide walks through the choice style by style.
