The short answer: grillz are a removable piece of jewelry that fits over your natural teeth, while veneers are a permanent dental restoration bonded directly to the tooth. One comes off before bed. The other doesn't come off at all.
This is one of the most common questions we get, usually from someone who's seen a permanent-looking gold or diamond smile online and assumed it had to be dental work. It's a fair mix-up; some of the most photographed "grillz" in music videos and interviews are actually permanent veneers or caps, not jewelry. But the two products solve different problems, cost very differently, and ask for a very different level of commitment.
How They're Made
Custom grillz start with an impression of your teeth. It's either taken at one of our locations or through an at-home impression kit we mail out. From that mold, we cast a fitted piece in silver, 10K, or 14K gold (or moissanite/diamond-set versions of any of those) that slides over your existing teeth like a removable cap. Nothing is altered or removed from the tooth underneath.
Veneers, on the other hand, require a dentist to shave down a thin layer of the natural tooth enamel, then permanently bond a porcelain or composite shell (or in the case of "gold veneers," a metal cap) over what's left. It's an irreversible dental procedure, not a piece of jewelry.
Cost
Custom grillz typically run from a few hundred dollars for a simple silver or gold-plated set up to several thousand for a full gold or diamond-set bustdown. Permanent gold or diamond veneers, because they involve a licensed dentist, anesthesia, and irreversible tooth preparation, routinely start in the five-figure range for a full set, and that's before any repairs if a veneer chips or a bonded cap comes loose.
Commitment and Reversibility
This is the real dividing line. Grillz go on when you want them and come off when you don't (for eating, for sleeping, for a job interview, for anything). Veneers are permanent. Once a dentist has shaved down the enamel to fit them, there's no going back to your natural tooth structure, and every veneer will eventually need replacing, at dentist prices, for the rest of your life.
The Honest Section: When Veneers Might Actually Be the Better Choice
We make and sell grillz, and often do coverups for our customers who have missing teeth, gaps, or chips they'd like to hide. But grillz are not veneers, and it you'd like a permanent solution, it's always a good idea to consult your dentist. If what you actually want is a permanent gold or diamond smile you never have to think about, take off, or store safely, we can create permanent caps that the dentist can cement. This option has a lot more upkeep and maintenance than a pull out grill, and requires at least 18k dental gold in its construction. Veneers and permanent grillz exist for people who want a permanent cosmetic change with a natural look and are comfortable with the dental commitment and cost that comes with it.
Where we see people get this backwards is the opposite direction: someone gets quoted for permanent gold veneers because they wanted "gold teeth for a video shoot" or a specific event, when a custom grillz set would have gotten the same look for a fraction of the cost, with zero dental work, and the option to never wear it again. If the appeal is the look rather than permanence itself, grillz almost always make more sense.
Which One Should You Get?
If you want to wear a gold or iced-out smile sometimes for performances, going out, or everyday flexing, then go with custom grillz. If you're set on a permanent, everyday gold or diamond smile and understand the dental commitment, talk to a licensed cosmetic dentist about veneers and custom permanent grillz options.
